"Pass the Baton" opens a new store in Gion, Kyoto. It is also the first restaurant chain to offer "tea and sake"

Jul 14, 2015

Select recycle shop PASS THE BATON will open its third store in Kyoto's Gion district (77-6 Sueyoshicho, Higashiyama-ku, Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture) on August 8th.

The shop will open in an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings designated by the government in accordance with the Cultural Properties Protection Act, and following on from its Marunouchi and Omotesando stores, the interior design of the building was handled by Katayama Masamichi. Based on PASS THE BATON's concept of "valuing what already exists and creating new value," the traditional building, which is over 120 years old, was redesigned.

In addition to recycle items collected from Kyoto residents, the shop will also offer a wide range of items created in collaboration with Kyoto's traditional crafts. In collaboration with Hosoo, a company that promotes new and innovative manufacturing, including developing the world's only wide loom for weaving 150cm wide Nishijin-ori textiles, the company has produced the Nishijin-ori Camellia Corsage (9,000 yen) and Nishijin-ori Pleated Frill Tote Bag (price to be determined / color may change). Other items on offer include the "Back to the Future Tea Caddy" (12,000 to 18,000 yen), a collaboration with Kaikado, Japan's oldest maker of handmade tea canisters; the "Shimi Bamboo Chopsticks and Kyoto-style Chopstick Rest Set" (1,600 yen), a collaboration with Kochosai Kosuge, a long-established manufacturer of creative bamboo crafts; "KANAAMI JEWELRY" (13,000 to 18,000 yen), a collaboration with Kanaami Tsuji, which handcrafts and sells everyday items such as tea strainers and ceramic grill racks; and "Natural-born-cutlery" (1,800 to 3,300 yen), a collaboration with Nakagawa Woodcraft Hira Kobo, a woodcraft manufacturer. The shop also houses a dining space called "Ocha to Sake Tasuki," which proposes new approaches to tea while cherishing traditional techniques and spirit. They offer a variety of menu items that can only be enjoyed here, such as shaved ice made with "natural ice from Mt. Fuji" that can be enjoyed all year round, and original tea-based cocktails. Most of the tableware and glasses they offer can also be purchased on the spot.
