Tokyo Midtown's Autumn Design Event to feature Kengo Kuma's "Tsumiki Pyramid"

Jul 15, 2015

Tokyo Midtown will host its autumn design event, "Tokyo Midtown DESIGN TOUCH 2015," from October 16th to November 3rd. Launched in 2007, this annual event marks its ninth anniversary. This year, the theme of "connected design" is "connected design," and various projects will be implemented, including installations by top creators and design proposals that allow visitors to experience new lifestyles. The main event will be "Tsumiki Square," held on the lawn plaza. Architect Kengo Kuma, who is directing the event, is collaborating with the forest conservation organization "more trees" to create a plaza where visitors can enjoy design by connecting blocks made from domestic wood. Visitors can enjoy design while interacting with various block-based creations, such as a mysterious arcade you can walk through and a giant pyramid. Three young creators will also be showcasing installations based on their own creative ideas. Additionally, Ryohin Keikaku, the company behind MUJI, will be showcasing a new "hut" project called "MUJI HUT," which will debut a house developed by three designers: Naoto Fukasawa, Jasper Morrison, and Konstantin Grcic. The event will also feature the "DESIGN TOUCH Conference," a one-day design college where top creators will discuss the current state of design as it permeates lifestyles, including global design and architecture. The event will also feature the presentation and exhibition of winning works from the "Tokyo Midtown Award," a competition aimed at discovering and supporting the next generation of artists and designers, as well as an awards ceremony. Other events include a collaborative project featuring traditional Japanese craftsmen and Japan's leading designers, set on a natural promenade, and the latest reports and archival footage from Milano Salone 2015, the world's largest international furniture fair.
