Supplement-like!? Colorful fève bean sweets [Today's Omiya]

Jul 23, 2015

As a special edition of "Today's Item," a daily series showcasing recommended products from our editorial team, we're introducing "Tokyo souvenirs" selected by fashion and beauty industry insiders, running until July 31st. This is the season when many people bring gifts for seasonal greetings or when returning home. If you're having trouble deciding what to bring, check out this list of top picks from connoisseurs.

Today's pick is a bean confectionery brand called "feve," recommended by Masae Sato, assistant AD and PR manager at Bluebell Japan, which handles attaché de presses for international cosmetics and fashion brands.

"feve," headquartered in Jiyugaoka, Tokyo, is a brand created by pastry chef Hironobu Tsujiguchi. The name of the shop is French for "broad bean" or "happiness." Tsujiguchi's idea of transforming nutritious beans, which have long been valued as a supplement, into delicately flavored sweets led to the creation of "bean sweets," a new snack that can be enjoyed easily like a supplement. "They're not bulky and light. Each one is reasonably priced and available in a variety of combinations or individually, making it fun to choose a flavor based on the recipient's gender, age, or other characteristics," says Sato. The lineup is rich and varied, including the vibrant pink "Cashew x Raspberry," made with cashew nuts coated in sweet and sour raspberry powder; the "Soy Milk Rice Crackers x Camembert Black Pepper," made with deep-fried rice crackers seasoned with green laver, sesame seeds, and soy milk, and finished with cheese and black pepper; and the "Walnut x Wasanbon," made with walnuts, long considered a beauty food, coated in gently sweet wasanbon sugar. "The envelope-shaped packaging with its colorful illustrations is also cute," says Sato. The appealing style, from individual items packaged by type to the "Fève Mix," which contains several individual items, allows you to choose the flavor to suit any occasion.
