This is the season when many occasions bring gifts, such as for seasonal greetings or returning home. If you're having trouble deciding what to bring, check out this list of top picks from connoisseurs.

Beauty journalist Yoshiko Watanabe, who also writes for FASHION HEADLINE, recommends HIGASHIYA's "Hitokuchigashi." HIGASHIYA, with stores in Tokyo's Ginza and Minami-Aoyama districts, is a Japanese confectionery shop highly sought after by fashion-conscious individuals for its modern interpretation of traditional sweets. "From the packaging, shape, decoration, and flavor, the world of Japanese modernity is overflowing with originality, making it a one-of-a-kind experience," says Watanabe.

These "Hitokuchigashi," named after traditional Japanese colors, are delicate and beautiful, like chocolate, with small, adorable shapes. And once you put it in your mouth, you'll be amazed by its extraordinary flavor. For example, the "Natsume Butter" combines dates with walnuts and rich fermented butter. It incorporates ideas and ingenuity not found in traditional Japanese sweets.

With a rich flavor, it goes well not only with Japanese tea, but also with alcohol, just like Western sweets. Two sets containing six different "bite-sized sweets" are available.

Their scroll-like packaging is also one reason they make a popular gift. "If you give them as a gift to an office with overseas staff or to the home of a friend visiting from overseas, they'll likely be interested in the packaging and design, which will spark conversation," says Watanabe Yoshiko.
