On March 24, 2021, RSN Japan, the operator of the Austrian wine glass company Riedel, will release the "Dom Pérignon Glass (1 piece)," developed in collaboration with Riedel's Chief Winemaker to maximize the unique character of Dom Pérignon, the pinnacle of Champagne, exclusively at Riedel stores and its official online shop.

Dom Pérignon is an artistic vintage champagne crafted with exquisite balance using only grapes harvested in exceptional years. The quality of the wine is determined by three factors: the climate of the harvest year, the plenitude (the peak drinking period reached during the long aging process on the lees), and the beautiful color of the white or rosé wine. Creating a glass that would fully bring out the unique character of Dom Pérignon, which comes in a variety of vintages, plenitudes, and hues, initially seemed extremely challenging. However, upon receiving this request, Riedel, together with Richard Geoffroy, former Dom Pérignon's Chief Winemaker, and Vincent Chaperon, who became Chief Winemaker in 2019, set out to develop a glass that would ensure the ultimate tasting experience in terms of sight, smell, and taste.

"We are honored to have had the opportunity to work on this project with Dom Pérignon and Richard Geoffroy, whose visionary vision allowed him to perfectly realize his ideas," said Maximilian Riedel, CEO of Riedel and 11th generation head of the Riedel family.

Champagne Determines the Shape of the Glass
The Riedel glass tradition dates back to 1673 in Bohemia (formerly the Czech Republic). Riedel initially produced decorative, traditionally designed glasses. However, Klaus Riedel, the ninth generation head of the company, was inspired by the Bauhaus philosophy of "form follows function." Starting in the late 1950s, he began creating functional glasses with minimal ornamentation to highlight the complex character of wines. Today, Riedel's guiding principle is that the final shape of a glass should be determined solely by the wine itself, not by preconceived design or trends.

A Brilliant Shape That Unites All Elements
The Dom Pérignon glass took more than a year to create. This unprecedented glass underwent numerous tastings, with the final shape determined by the analysis and refinements proposed by Richard Geoffroy, former Dom Pérignon Winemaker-in-Chief.

Riedel focused on the unique characteristics of each glass to create a shape that would work regardless of the vintage of Dom Pérignon it was poured into. Always staying true to the winemaker's vision, this new glass highlights the following aspects of Dom Pérignon, creating a stage where each can beautifully harmonize.

■ Weight: Rich yet light and smooth, powerful without being hard.
■ Flow: A dignified impression. A "yin and yang" that expresses the complexities of Champagne in a balanced way without overstating any one aspect.
■ Texture: Smooth and seamless.
■ Finish: A rich fruitiness with a moderate minerality.

"This Dom Pérignon glass is a magical vessel that combines functionality and design. It feels comfortable in the hand, and pouring Dom Pérignon into a refined glass will lift your spirits even more," says Maximilian Riedel, 11th generation head of the Riedel family.
