Seibu Railway is renovating Seibu Ikebukuro Station, which serves approximately 480,000 people daily.
To realize the Seibu Group's slogan, "From outings to smiling faces," the station will combine the natural beauty of the area along the line with the urban charm of Ikebukuro Station. The first-floor east entrance, facing Meiji Dori, features soft curves and lighting that make it stand out even at night. Gates will be installed in areas of the first-floor and basement concourse where other lines connect, improving visibility. Natural materials will be used to evoke the Chichibu and Hanno areas along the line. In addition, internal lighting with a "sun" motif will be used near the first-floor ticket gates, and some ceilings will feature dappled sunlight filtering through the trees.
The entire renovation will include the addition of fitting spaces and additional booths to the restrooms. Other improvements, including the introduction of LED and LCD train information displays, signage in four languages, updated air conditioning on platforms and in the concourse, platform doors (scheduled for completion in 2017), and the construction of new nursing rooms, will ensure safety and comfort.
The stores will also be completely renovated, targeting young women. The food zone on the first basement floor will feature quick eateries serving ochazuke (rice with green tea) and udon noodles, the takeout zone will feature sweets and bookstores that women can easily drop by, and the fashion zone will feature stores selling clothing and cosmetics aimed at women in their 20s and 30s. On the first floor, convenience stores and cafes will be opened, aiming to provide convenience. Completion is scheduled for March 2016.
