The "Rhizomatiks inspired by Perfume" exhibition, which will open on September 20th and 21st at the NTT InterCommunication Center (ICC) in Tokyo Opera City Shinjuku, was unveiled to the press.
The exhibition showcases cutting-edge media presentation techniques for the techno-pop unit Perfume, which Rhizomatiks, a creative group led by media art artists Daito Manabe and Motoi Ishibashi, has been working on since 2010.
To the right of the entrance is the "Physicalizing Data by Rhizomatiks" corner, an installation projecting video onto statues of the three Perfume members, unveiled as part of the first installment of Perfume's "Global Site Project." Holographic images of the three dancing Perfume members, A-chan, Nocchi, and Kashiyuka, appear.
To the left of the entrance is the corner for "Spring of Life," Perfume's 15th song. The LED-lit costumes used in the music video for the song will be on display. The costumes light up as the song plays. A laptop with the program code for controlling the lighting effects is also on display.
Next is the "3D Scan System for Perfume," an interactive installation that allows visitors to experience the third installment of Perfume's "Global Site Project." Standing at the center of three Kinects, you're instantly scanned, and a 3D image of yourself is displayed on the screen using the same techniques used in the project. On the back wall is a display of "Perfume "Global Site Project #003," a panel of works submitted by fans for the project.
The final exhibit is "Perfume WORLD TOUR 2nd intro." Two separate costumes worn on the tour and at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity 2013 are on display. As the song "Spending all my time" plays, projection mapping is performed on the costumes, and they can even transform into wing-like shapes.
ICC Chief Curator Minoru Hatanaka said, "Rhizomatiks are creators who transcend the boundaries of 'media art' and 'entertainment.' Because it is entertainment, there are areas where they can experiment, and I think the Perfume project in particular embodies that. It was Manabe's suggestion to focus on their work with Perfume."
