Hermès at Shinjuku Isetan reopens after renovation. Maison lifestyle proposals

Oct 31, 2014

The Hermès boutique on the first floor of the Isetan Shinjuku store, which has been undergoing renovation since July 30, will reopen on November 1.

The boutique has been expanded and now has two entrances. Upon entering the main entrance, you'll be greeted by the maison's iconic "Carré" scarf. The interior, decorated with soft white wood tones, exudes an open, bright, and comfortable atmosphere. The design was handled by RDAI (Rena Dumas Architecture d'Enthérieur), a French firm that designs interiors for Hermès boutiques around the world. A window to the right of the entrance lets in soft natural light through a single mesh screen, creating an open yet calming space despite being located in a bustling department store. The floors are divided into zones, with tile and carpet, each designed with comfort in mind. The 236-square-meter sales floor offers a wide variety of Hermès items, from men's and women's ready-to-wear to leather goods like bags, lifestyle items like tableware, blankets, and cushions, fragrances, the "Écriture Collection" featuring stationery like notebooks and the Marc Newson-designed Nautilus pen, jewelry including wedding rings, and even watches. The new "H Deco" tea set is available for tableware. This is Hermès' second brick-and-mortar store, following the Ginza Maison Hermès location. Also available as a store-exclusive item is a bracelet (¥20,000) featuring a silk scarf pattern and a horse-motif charm. Other rare items available to coincide with the store's opening include a limited-edition timepiece featuring a French lacquer reproduction of the horse depicted on the "Cheval Dorian" tableware, and the glittering "Medor" watch with pavé detailing.

Another highlight is the show window, created by manga artist Yokoyama Yuichi, which will mark the opening of the new boutique. A stark change from Yokoyama's monotone cartoons, which were painted on the exterior wall of the temporary fence during the renovation work, the colorful, pop, and three-dimensional cartoons will highlight the Hermès items.

In addition, to commemorate the renovation, an event titled "The World of Écriture - What it Means to Write" will be held from November 5th to 11th at The Stage on the first floor of the main building of Isetan Shinjuku, showcasing the Écriture collection centered around the new Hermès fountain pen, the Nautilus. The event will highlight the importance and richness of "writing," which is often forgotten in today's world where email is the norm.
