[2013-2014 AW Tokyo Collection] Christian Dada showcases designs incorporating "fusion"

Mar 19, 2013

On March 18th, Christian Dada presented its 2013-14 Autumn/Winter collection at Shibuya Hikarie. The designer was Morikawa Masanori.
Last season, the brand presented clothes encased in ice, but this time, they presented a runway show, primarily men's but also women's collections.
The show kicked off with a performance by the Kansai-based band Vampillia. The theme was "FENGHUANG (Myth and Modernity)." FENGHUANG refers to the mythical bird, the phoenix. "Feng" refers to the male and "huang" refers to the female, so "fusion" became the keyword for the collection.
The first look was a casual shirt adorned with gorgeous lace, paired with elegantly tailored slacks with gathered pleats. Other monochrome looks combined disparate elements, such as down jackets and pants enhanced with elegant embroidery and silhouettes, shorts paired with pleated skirts, and hats and T-shirts adorned with studs.

The sharp, flowing lines seen throughout the collection were inspired by the wings of a phoenix. Both men and women wore long hair, resembling long tail feathers. Colorless makeup created androgynous characters, allowing the same designs to be worn across genders.

The women's line also featured bustle-style silhouettes, classic military-style coats with high collars and puff sleeves, and body-conscious dresses that revealed a glimpse of bare skin.

High platform shoes made from large bird wings, goat hair, and fur were designed by haute couture shoe designer Shinya Kushino, based on the theme of "Stairway to Heaven." Here, too, the idea of fusing real clothing with unreal fashion (haute couture shoes) was evident.

For the finale, five looks symbolizing this season were shown in the five colors of the phoenix: black, yellow, red, blue, and white. Morikawa was also awarded the DHL Designer Award, recognized as an up-and-coming designer with promising international success. The award ceremony was held after the show.
