A silk-themed sweets collection is on sale in the basement food section of Isetan Shinjuku until March 15th.
The store's Japanese confectionery buyer commented, "We chose the same theme for our food items as the women's clothing section is running a 'silk special' at the same time. When it comes to Japanese confectionery, the culture of 'mitate' (representation) is its greatest virtue. It's common to express the four seasons through color and shape, but this time we tried a new approach by expressing the texture of the fabric."
Each Japanese confectionery shop on the same floor is creating original products with a visual reminiscent of silk. Kyo-gashi-sho Tsuruya Yoshinobu will release "Orihime Mochi" (pink, white, yellow / 450 yen each), a white bean paste wrapped in uriwara (sweet rice cake) that resembles the twisted, bundled silk threads of Nishijin-ori (western Japanese textiles).
Sweets shaped like cocoons include Hanazono Manju's "Shiromayu" (381 yen each), a rice cake filled with yellow bean paste, and Obusedo Shinjuku's "Kurimayu" (300 yen), a bun filled with chestnut paste. Oimatsu will release "Kinu no Ito" (5 pieces/650 yen), a dried confectionery made with wasanbon sugar to resemble silk thread wound on a spool.
Sweets containing "silk protein solution," a tasteless and odorless aqueous solution developed by Matsuda Sericulture that gives sweets a moist texture without losing their flavor, will also be available. Some of the sweets include Il Fait Jour's "Moist Honey Roll" (1,200 yen, available until March 10th), which has a soft aroma of honey, and Yokohama Motomachi Mutokirou's "Moist Silky Yokohama Biscuit Au Soie" (5 pieces/1,500 yen, available until March 10th), which sells baked goods made with rice flour.
Other sweets available include Mikasayama's "Dorayaki White" (250 yen each), a pure white mini dorayaki filled with milk bean paste and topped with white chocolate, and the "Silk Angel Food Cake" (1,700 yen), a chiffon cake with a fragrance reminiscent of almond tofu that fills your mouth, with a fluffy, smooth texture like silk.
In this way, in the Japanese and Western sweets corner, you can enjoy a lineup of sweets created from every angle with the theme of "silk," from sweets that have silk itself incorporated into the dough, to sweets that resemble silk, sweets that are pure white like silk, and sweets that have a smooth and fluffy texture like silk.
