
Hirohiko Araki's "JoJolion: JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Part 8" has been selected as the winner of the Manga Division Grand Prize at the 17th Japan Media Arts Festival, sponsored by the Agency for Cultural Affairs. The series began serialization in the June 2011 issue of the manga magazine Ultra Jump (Shueisha), and five volumes have been published to date. While set in Morioh Town, the same location as Part 4, "Diamond is Unbreakable," the historical background is inherited from Part 7, "Steel Ball Run." The story follows the amnesiac protagonist, Josuke Higashikata, as he searches for his roots. The Japan Media Arts Festival, sponsored by the Agency for Cultural Affairs, is a comprehensive media arts festival honoring works in four categories: art, entertainment, animation, and manga. This year's submissions totaled 4,347 (124% increase over last year), including a record 2,347 works from 83 countries and regions overseas. The winners of this year's Art, Entertainment, and Animation Grand Prizes were "crt mgn" by Carsten NICOLAI, "Sound of Honda / Ayrton Senna 1989" by Kaoru Kanno, Sotaro Homoe, Yu Oki, Nadja Kirilova, Kaori Yonezawa, Mitsutoshi Sekine, Taeji Sawai, and Daito Manabe, and "Honey-Colored Yun" by Yun and Laurent Boileau.
The award ceremony will be held on February 4, 2014, and an exhibition of the winning works will be held at the National Art Center, Tokyo in Roppongi, Tokyo from February 5 to 16.
