Jan 29, 2013

The 2012 (16th) Japan Media Arts Festival Award-Winning Works Exhibition will be held at the National Art Center, Tokyo in Roppongi, Tokyo, starting February 13th. Approximately 120 award-winning works, selected from 3,503 submissions from Japan and abroad, will be showcased in four categories: Art, Entertainment, Animation, and Manga, showcasing the latest in media arts. The National Art Center, Tokyo will exhibit award-winning works across a wide range of genres, while nearby satellite venues will host special screenings of animation and video works. A manga library will also be set up, allowing visitors to browse award-winning works. Various events are also planned, including performances, presentations by award winners, and symposiums with judges and guests. In the Entertainment category, the Grand Prize went to the "Perfume Global Site Project," featuring Daito Manabe, MIKIKO, Yasutaka Nakata, and others. This project commemorates Perfume's global debut, and their original music and motion-captured choreography are freely available on their official website. Additionally, the social coding service GitHub has provided extensions and sample code for using data, encouraging programmers to create derivative works, resulting in over 500 projects from around the world.

The Grand Prize in the Animation category went to Katsuhiro Otomo's "Hinoyojin." This fictional work, based on the Great Fire of Edo, combines hand-drawn animation with 3DCG to create a groundbreaking visual expression.

The Grand Prize in the Art category went to "Pendulum Choir," a musical performance piece featuring nine vocalists singing on an automated platform. Cod.Act, the art unit of Michel and André DÉCOSTERD, combines electronic sound, vocals, technology, and physicality in this performance. This is the long-awaited Asian debut.

In the Manga category, the Grand Prize went to "The Dark Lands" by Benoît Peeters and François Schuiten. It is a popular French-Belgian comic series that depicts a series of mysterious incidents that take place in the Dark Lands, a mysterious group of cities in a parallel world.

The Grand Prize winning works in the Entertainment, Animation and Art categories are scheduled to be performed at the venue.
