NHK World, NHK's English-language channel for overseas audiences, will feature the new program "Artisan × Designer" on February 26th, premiering its first episode.
Something to Touch was created by Shioyasu Lacquerware Studio, a lacquerware craftsmanship with over 150 years of tradition, and the design project "Mairu," which was selected as one of the "24 Young Designs Selected by Elle Decor Magazines from Around the World" at the 2009 Milan Salone. Utilizing the beauty of Wajima lacquerware, the speaker is based on the concept of "touch." Its seamless, teardrop-shaped form was completed through 124 steps involving various specialized artisans, taking more than six months to complete. The acoustics are also controlled with lacquer.
Each episode of this program closely follows a traditional artisan and an industrial designer, showcasing the masterpieces born from their collaboration. It will be broadcast six times, every four hours, starting at 11:30 a.m. Japan time. NHK World programs can be viewed in Japan on the official website or by downloading the free dedicated app on your smartphone.
