Geoff McFetridge's drawings on Heath Ceramics and Landscape Products furniture. Exhibition currently on at Play Mountain

Feb 8, 2013

Playmountain in Sendagaya, Tokyo, is currently hosting an exhibition by Geoff McFetridge titled "My Head Disappears When My Hands Are Thinking." He's a Los Angeles-based graphic designer and a key figure in American West Coast culture. The exhibit primarily features hand-painted designs and reliefs by Geoff on pottery from Heath Ceramics, directed by ceramicist Adam Silverman. The idea for this exhibition came about after Shinichiro Nakahara of Landscape Products saw an exhibition of the same name held in Los Angeles in 2011. The exhibition has been further enhanced by the addition of new works by Geoff, including furniture from Landscape Products and bags from TEMBEA. His drawings are also on display and for sale, and have been well-received. "I love the works themselves, of course, but also the title Jeff gave them: 'When I Think with My Hands, My Mind is Empty.' It seems to suggest that, like the 'unconscious beauty' of folk art, the thought of creating something beautiful tends to escape. He thinks deeply, then moves his hands naturally. His expression is sharp. While his own gentle character is evident in his style, I think he has also assimilated his favorite artists, such as Ben Shahn and Eames, to create his current style. One of the reasons I exhibited his drawings alongside the exhibition was because the notebooks I saw in his Los Angeles studio were truly amazing. They convey the fascinating process of how his works are created," says Shinichiro Nakahara. The uniquely surreal images in the exhibit were inspired by coins from the Roman Empire. At the core of the series' nonchalant and informal expressive form is the lightness and depth unique to someone who approaches creation with an open mind.
