Tokyo Midtown will be holding its Christmas event, "Midtown Christmas 2014," from November 13th to December 25th. On the first day of the event, an illumination lighting ceremony was held at the main venue, the lawn plaza "Starlight Garden 2014." The theme of the venue was "Space Travel." Actress Rie Miyazawa attended the ceremony and, at the master of ceremonies' signal, the lights were turned on. 180,000 blue-based LEDs lit up simultaneously across the vast 2,000-square-meter site, transforming the area into a fantastical world reminiscent of outer space. This year's highlight is Japan's first illumination device, the "Stick Illumination." 264 lights that move freely from bottom to top create the illusion of floating stardust and the weightlessness of space, creating a dynamic, three-dimensional illumination show. This is the first time that Tokyo Midtown has attempted this feat, shining lights up to 4 meters high. Miyazawa loves illuminations and visits Tokyo Midtown every year to see them. She was mesmerized by the LEDs immediately after they were lit. She also seemed very excited, taking selfies with the illuminations in the background. When asked, "What are your plans for Christmas this year?" she smiled and replied, "Like every year, I'll get together with my favorite friends and exchange gifts. Santa Claus comes to my house every year, so I'm starting to prepare now." Finally, she concluded by saying to visitors, "I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas filled with love." Tokyo Midtown is celebrating its eighth Christmas. This year, under the theme of "Midtown Cruise," illuminations will be displayed not only at the venue but also in various locations surrounding the facility, including the walkway leading to the lawn plaza and along Gaien Higashi Dori. Last year, 5.6 million people visited the event, and many more are expected this year.
