This year marks the last Mikimoto Christmas tree. The Nodame violinist will be lighting it up.

Nov 9, 2014

Mikimoto will be setting up the "Mikimoto Jumbo Christmas Tree" in front of its flagship store in Ginza, Tokyo, from November 15th until December 25th. While the tree has been a winter staple in Ginza since 1976, this year will be its final display due to the reconstruction of the flagship store, which will begin in January 2015. The approximately 10-meter-tall fir tree, 30 to 40 years old and transported from Hokkaido with its roots still attached, is equipped with 6,500 multicolored LEDs, custom-made for Mikimoto. The theme of this year's illuminations is "connecting." A luminous object shaped like a pearl necklace will be installed at the base of the tree, and archive footage of the Mikimoto flagship store and its past Christmas trees, spanning from the Meiji era to the present, will be projected. During the exhibition, music and light displays will be held every hour on the hour, starting at 11:00 AM. The tree's illuminations and the necklace-shaped object will shine in unison to the melody of "White Christmas."

The tree lighting ceremony will be held at 4:15 pm on November 15th. Children from all over the world will light the tree, and violinist, composer, and arranger Naoto, who also appeared in the TV drama "Nodame Cantabile," will perform a live performance.

The Mikimoto flagship store has been in business at its current location since 1906, but closed in January 2015 and reconstruction work began in preparation for its grand opening in March 2017. During this construction, Mikimoto Ginza 2 in Ginza 2-chome will operate as a temporary store for the flagship store. The new store will be 56 meters tall and have 12 floors above ground and 2 floors below ground, approximately 2.5 times the sales floor area of the current store. The aim is to maintain a luxurious feel and become a Ginza landmark that blends into the city while still making a strong presence.
