The Ginza 6-chome District Urban Redevelopment Preparatory Association announced on December 12 that it received approval to establish the "Ginza 6-chome District 10 Type 1 Urban Redevelopment Project." This marks the start of a large-scale, multi-purpose facility project, one of the largest in the Ginza area.
The redevelopment area, consisting of two blocks in Ginza, Chuo Ward, Tokyo: the block containing the Matsuzakaya Ginza store (Ginza 6-chome 10) and the adjacent block (Ginza 6-chome 11), covers an area of approximately 1.4 hectares. To create a leading international commercial and tourist hub in Tokyo, the project will include a commercial facility of approximately 50,000 square meters (approximately 15,000 tsubo), large-scale office facilities, and cultural and exchange facilities.
As a tourist hub, the project will include space to accommodate tourists, boarding and disembarking areas for tour buses, and a rooftop garden of approximately 4,000 square meters, open to the surrounding area and representing the largest area in the Ginza area. In addition, the project will strengthen and expand a safe and comfortable pedestrian network, and install emergency power generation and disaster preparedness storage facilities. As a community-based area, it will increase convenience and comfort for visitors and improve the region's disaster prevention capabilities in the event of a disaster.
Three companies are expected to invest in this project: L Real Estate (LRE), Sumitomo Corporation, and Mori Building Co., Ltd. The detailed design will be handled by the Ginza 6-Chome District Urban Redevelopment Planning and Design Consortium (Kajima Corporation and Taniguchi Architects and Associates), with Kajima Corporation participating as the designated business agent. The rights conversion plan is expected to be approved in 2013, with construction beginning in 2014 and completion scheduled for August 2016.
In line with the progress of the redevelopment, Daimaru Matsuzakaya Department Stores has decided to temporarily close its store on June 30, 2013.
