VIKTOR&ROLF, the brand created by Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren, presented their Spring/Summer 2017 Haute Couture collection at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris. The collection was titled "Boulevard of Broken Dreams." While last season's collections featured completely new pieces, this season's collection featured a collage of materials from vintage cocktail and evening dresses. A single dress was dismantled and the resulting pieces were used to create multiple dresses, yet each look exuded a completely different atmosphere. The gold-embroidered trim was inspired by kintsugi, a Japanese method of repairing ceramics. This resonated with the direction of this collection, as it recognizes the beauty inherent in imperfection and transforms the original into something even more beautiful and valuable.
The dresses, which make full use of patchwork and appliqué, are truly artistic and fit in with their concept of "wearable art." However, they are not overly focused on the concept and exude a relaxed feel, which is quite surprising. While the free-flowing creations are characteristic of Viktor & Rolf, this collection, which continues from the previous season, gives the impression of establishing a new style. Only three pieces have been decided to be sold on the website, priced at 20,000 euros each (approximately 2.4 million yen).
