Rick Owens brings back the 70s whirlwind with his Fall/Winter 2017-18 Women's Collection

Mar 14, 2017

On March 2nd, Rick Owens held his Fall/Winter 2017-18 women's collection show at the Palais de Tokyo. The collection was titled "Glitter."

The men's collection also had the same title, but this time he focused particularly on the spirit of the 1970s, examining the ceremonies that accompanied the era of reform. Rick Owens viewed the fashion show as a ceremony, and carefully considered how to express it in a positive light.

In addition, his father, who passed away last year, was a Japanophile who had stayed in Japan immediately after the war and was also a kimono collector, which led to the creation of cape and cloak shapes. The masks, made from sweatshirts and cut-and-sewn clothing, were also created with a Japanese taste.

Each look is coordinated with simple cut-and-sew tops as innerwear, but the sculptural beauty of the outerwear is unique to Rick Owens, and this season he has paired it with oversized items that make the most of the characteristics of the materials, or created volume with a styling known as "banana peel," in which the top part is worn unzipped, a style also seen in the men's collection. One of the materials frequently used is waxed double-face wool melton, which shows off a unique tension and texture.

Mega Duchess, an even thicker version of Duchess satin used in haute couture, was also used to create sculptural beauty. The collection was full of looks reminiscent of sculptural works, emphasizing the artistic side of the collection.
