Hidenori Kumakiri's beautiful people, which moved its presentation venue to Paris for the Fall/Winter 2017-18 season, presented a women's collection in the form of a mini-show at Elephant Panam, a club near Place Vendôme. The collection, titled "Wafuku," boldly incorporated kimono elements, but featured modern pieces that blurred the lines between Western and Eastern. Hakama-like skirts, pokkuri-like shoes, and obi-like leather belts. All are "like" but never quite the same; they exist as something entirely new. Fabric that appears to be kasuri is actually a checked fil coupe material, and a motif that appears to be a kimono pattern is actually an enlarged version of Liberty's "Strawberry Thief," designed by William Morris. Rather than remaining in their original form, the pieces have been altered to create a new look. The accessories were also fresh, including large pearl earrings, a huge brilliant-cut crystal necklace, and a school bag-like bag. Although the number of items presented was small, it was a well-crafted and fulfilling collection.
