On March 1st, John Galliano's Maison Margiela presented its Fall/Winter 2017 "Défilé" collection at the Grand Palais. Following on from his selfie-themed Spring/Summer 2017 "Artisanal" collection, which was released in January, the collection showcased a new approach to layering. Aiming to reveal the structure and essence of clothing, the collection showcased a technique of overlaying existing pieces by cutting out pieces to reveal the items underneath. The latter was inspired by the act of tracing lines on a portrait using a selfie app. The collection's base pieces included college jumpers and sartorial coats from the 1940s and 1950s, which were cut out to reveal only the stitching lines, emphasizing the garment's structure. In contrast to this stripped-down approach, the collection featured decorative pieces, such as folkloric carpet jacquard with neon-colored 3D embroidery. Layering raw-edged cotton velvet parts to create an astrakhan look, and using python-like materials, the collection was filled with the magic of John Galliano, the magician who blurs the line between illusion and reality.
