On March 4th, Rei Kawakubo's COMME des GARÇONS held its Fall/Winter 2017-18 collection show at the Elysées Montmartre, a theater at the foot of Montmartre in Paris. The collection's theme was "The Future of Silhouette." It offered a unique interpretation of the silhouette of the future. The collection utilized unwoven, "unfabric" materials, including flocked sheets, laminated sheets, recycled felt, and padded materials. Maintaining the silhouette can be difficult with large pieces, but the designer used interlining to create tension in lighter materials, while heavier materials used a resin-hardened base. The collection featured unique pieces, such as a dress with a silicone lace pattern and a craft paper dress decorated with draped elements. While each piece appears to be separate and unrelated, they resonate with one another through their shared, massive silhouette.
Model Anna Cleveland's unique dance-infused movements gave the entire collection a sense of narrative. Although there were only 18 pieces, the collection left a powerful impression, imprinting a powerful worldview on the mind and leaving a mysterious lingering impression. Also during the Paris Collection, a press conference was held for the retrospective exhibition "Art of the In-Between," which will be held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York from May 4th, building up great anticipation for the exhibition.
