Mori Building to use Toranomon Hills as a catalyst to create a new international urban center. Will a Champs-Élysées Avenue be born in Tokyo?

Jun 4, 2014

Toranomon Hills (1-23-1-4 Toranomon, Minato-ku, Tokyo), a 52-story, 247-meter-tall complex, will open on June 11. Mori Building, the designated builder, held a completion press conference on the 4th. The complex will include the Andaz Tokyo, the first luxury hotel in Japan; a spacious office space of approximately 3,300 square meters per floor; high-class residences with outstanding views and hotel services; international-standard conference facilities; a commercial facility with 24 restaurants and other businesses; and approximately 6,000 square meters of open space. This new landmark will showcase Tokyo's new appeal to the world. Mori Building President and CEO Shingo Tsuji, who appeared at the press conference, outlined the facility and announced the company's future strategy, including the development of the surrounding area. The Loop Line 2 (between Shimbashi and Toranomon), which runs underground through Toranomon Hills, opened in March of this year after 68 years of construction. The ground-level "Shin-Tora-dori Avenue" will be developed as a new symbolic street in line with the Tokyo Champs-Élysées Project, launched by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government in March of this year. It will feature ample pedestrian space (up to 13 meters on each side), street trees, and bicycle lanes, transforming the metropolitan road into a vibrant and vibrant area, much like the Champs-Élysées in Paris, and revitalizing the entire city. The birth of Toranomon Hills, along with this, aims to dramatically develop the Shinbashi-Toranomon area, a hub for global companies and global people, as a pioneer in Tokyo's revitalization in preparation for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Mori Building intends to fully utilize its urban development expertise to contribute to the surrounding development and revitalization of the area. Over the next 10 years, the company is promoting 10 large-scale projects, including those in the Roppongi 5-chome West District and the Toranomon-Azabudai District. The project will cover an area of approximately 220,000 square meters and is expected to reach ¥1 trillion. The nearby Hotel Okura Tokyo is also scheduled to reopen in spring 2019. President Tsuji commented, "Toranomon Hills, developed in conjunction with roads through a public-private partnership, is a model for urban regeneration and the embodiment of Mori Building's ideal of a 'vertical garden city.' With the designation of the National Strategic Special Zone and the 2020 Tokyo Olympics now in place, this is our biggest and final chance. We will use Toranomon Hills as a catalyst to increase the magnetism of the entire area and promote further redevelopment of the surrounding area." Toranomon is where Mori Building was founded. Surrounded by the business districts of Shinbashi, Atago, and Kasumigaseki, there are surprisingly few large buildings in the area. Attention is focused on how Mori Building will use Toranomon Hills as a spark to develop its former home.
