Fashion designer Chisato Tsumori was born on November 12, 1954, in Saitama Prefecture.
She graduated from the Fashion Department of Bunka Fashion College's Design Department in 1976. The following year, she joined Issey Miyake International Inc. and worked as the designer for "Issey Miyake Sports." In 1983, she changed the brand name to "I.S. Chisato Tsumori Design" and became its chief designer. In 1985, she won the New Designer Award at the 3rd Mainichi Fashion Awards.
In 1990, she founded the Chisato Tsumori Design Office and launched her eponymous brand, "TSUMORI CHISATO." The concept is "A brand that expresses designer Chisato Tsumori's passions and interests with a free and honest approach. It offers a girly, sexy, and fantasy-filled, happy taste for adults." The brand has participated in the Tokyo Collection since its inception and has shown at the Paris Collection since 2003.
In 2002, she won the 20th Mainichi Fashion Award. The brand also offers a men's line, a dress line called "TSUMORI CHISATO DRESS," and a line called "cat's TSUMORI CHISATO" that focuses on cat motifs.
