The "IN-EI ISSEY MIYAKE" lighting fixture, designed by Miyake Design Office's Reality Lab, won the 2013 Good Design Gold Award. PLEATS PLEASE ISSEY MIYAKE (hereafter "PLEATS PLEASE") won the "Long Life Design Special Award." The Good Design Award is sponsored by the Japan Institute of Design Promotion. It is a design promotion initiative that aims to enrich our lives, industry, and society as a whole by selecting and honoring "good designs" from a wide range of possibilities. The IN-EI ISSEY MIYAKE lampshade uses Teijin Frontier's Ecopet Paper, a fiber made from recycled PET bottles. The shade, which has a texture reminiscent of Japanese paper, can be easily assembled and reshaped by hand, and can be stored compactly. Pleats Please, first introduced as part of the Issey Miyake collection in 1988, evolved with each season and launched as a full-fledged brand in 1993. Pursuing Issey Miyake's belief that "design has value only when it is incorporated into everyday life," the brand pursues modern, functional clothing that is lighter, easier to wear, and easier to handle, utilizing the traditional pleating material with cutting-edge technology. This is the first time that Pleats Please has won a special award for clothing. The brand's design value was recognized in categories such as "Body/Human," "Lifestyle," "Industry," and "Society/Environment." This year's Good Design Gold Award was awarded to 20 designs, including a chair designed by Naoto Fukasawa for Maruni Wood Industry Co., Ltd. and a library by Takeo City, Saga Prefecture, and Culture Convenience Club Co., Ltd. The Long Life Design Award went to Pilot's ballpoint pen and Sumitomo 3M's Post-it Note. There was no recipient of the Good Design Grand Prize.
