"The Great Radio Cassette Exhibition" is being held to enjoy the radio cassette player and its culture! Also featuring the cassette collections of Jun Miura and Hakase Suidobashi

Nov 17, 2016

The "Great Boombox Exhibition," celebrating boomboxes and their culture, will be held at the Parco Museum on the 7th floor of the Ikebukuro Parco Main Building from December 9th to 27th.
The exhibition focuses on the boombox, the ultimate all-in-one appliance embodied in the pride of Made in Japan, whose design and performance have made it popular around the world. Hosted by Junichi Matsuzaki, Japan's leading collector of boomboxes and home appliances, the exhibition showcases the diverse designs of the boombox and the culture that has emerged from them.
The museum will display over 100 carefully selected boomboxes from Junichi Matsuzaki's collection of 5,000 items. The exhibits include beautifully designed boomboxes, multi-functional boomboxes with added functions like televisions and keyboards, and the gigantic boomboxes that became a symbol of hip-hop. The exhibition also showcases the culture that has evolved alongside the boombox's popularity, including music, late-night radio broadcasts, and art. Over 100 cassette players and approximately 500 cassette tapes will be on display, conveying the feelings of those who once used them. Visitors will also be able to experience the cassettes and hear their sounds. The legendary cassette magazine "TRA" will also be featured in its entirety, along with a trailer for "Wild Style," the first hip-hop movie ever released in 1983 and directed by Charlie Ahan. Other exhibits will also feature cassette collections and cassette art by creators. The appeal of cassette tapes will be showcased in various ways, including a video of Jun Miura talking about his love for cassettes, which he has been collecting since he was in junior high, and Hakase Suidobashi, who will display his precious cassette collection of recordings of his mentor Beat Takeshi's ANN from his high school days.
