Manga artist Moyoco Anno's solo exhibition begins at Parco Museum, the first since the museum moved to Ikebukuro

Sep 1, 2016

Due to the temporary closure of Shibuya Parco, the Parco Museum relocated to Ikebukuro Parco. It reopened on September 1, 2016, on the 7th floor of the Ikebukuro Parco Main Building. The first exhibition was "Moyoco Anno Exhibition: 'STRIP!' PORTFOLIO 1996-2016," with art direction by Yuni Yoshida. This was the first large-scale solo exhibition to look back on the 20-year career of manga artist Moyoco Anno. From "Happy Mania," which began serialization in 1995, to "Sakuran," "Working Man," and "Sugar Sugar Rune," to the currently ongoing "Ochibisan" and "Nose-Long Gentleman Recollections," this invaluable exhibition allows visitors to rediscover her works, which transcend the boundaries of shojo manga and capture the contemporary atmosphere surrounding women, through rare original drawings. The exhibition is set up in a brothel-like enclosure for "Sakuran," while "Memoirs of a Gentleman with a Long Nose" is set in a slightly darkened room behind a velvet curtain. The original cover illustrations and famous scenes are displayed in spaces tailored to the works. Unusually for a solo exhibition featuring a manga artist's original artwork, photography is permitted throughout the exhibition. Also on display is the manuscript for the second volume of "Sakuran," a work considered a phantom by fans because it has never been published in book form. In addition to previously released original artwork, Moyoco Anno's newly drawn works for this exhibition and the accompanying art book are also featured. The merchandise corner offers merchandise inspired by the works, limited-edition postcards featuring artworks from the exhibition, and a reprint of a lingerie set by lingerie brand Ravijour, inspired by the lingerie worn by the characters in "Memoirs of a Gentleman with a Long Nose," available exclusively at the venue.
