A photo exhibition showcasing the city of Tokyo from various perspectives by Daido Moriyama, Takashi Homma, Naoya Hatakeyama, and others.

Nov 16, 2016

From November 22nd to January 29th, 2017, the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum will be holding a collection exhibition titled "TOP Collection Tokyo/TOKYO," featuring works from its collection themed around "Tokyo."

The Tokyo Photographic Art Museum holds collection exhibitions based on a different theme each year. The museum's first collection exhibition since its reopening will be themed around "Tokyo," a city whose very name evokes a variety of images. Tokyo is a mysterious city that cannot be summed up in a single image, with each person having their own image of it. It has also been a source of inspiration for many photographers. This exhibition will primarily feature works from the postwar period to the present day, selected from works collected under one of the museum's collection policies, "collecting domestic and international photographs that express and document Tokyo." The exhibition is divided into four sections: "On the Street Corner," which introduces the image of Tokyo that emerges from works captured from various perspectives; "In the Back Alleys," which captures the deeper, more realistic reality behind the glamour; "Tokyo Air Pocket," which photographs Tokyo's gardens and parks, including the Imperial Palace; "Peeking into the Invisible," which offers a look at an empty Tokyo and the inside of other people's homes; "Expanding Boundaries, Suburbia," which focuses on Tokyo, capturing borders that differ from administrative divisions; "Scenes from Nowhere," which features casual Tokyo scenes that could be found in any city; and "Playing with the Multi-Layered City: Tokyo," which captures photographs that appear to have been taken by playing with Tokyo, such as by adding artificial devices to the photography.

Exhibiting artists include Yasuhiro Ishimoto, Tadahiko Hayashi, Michio Yamauchi, Nobuyoshi Araki, Daido Moriyama, Yoko Asaumi, Eiji Ina, Ryuji Miyamoto, Norio Kobayashi, Takashi Homma, Hanayo, Ikko Narahara, Naoya Hatakeyama, Natsumi Hayashi, and Naoki Honjo.

Related events include a "Dialogue Appreciation Program," in which participants will discuss the images depicted in the exhibited works together before engaging in some basic darkroom production, as well as a gallery talk by the curator in charge. Also taking place at the same time is the "Tokyo/TOKYO Emerging Japanese Artists Vol. 13" exhibition, which is held each year with a different theme to discover promising artists and provide a platform for new creative activities.
