Fashion designer André Courreges was born on March 9, 1923, in the Navarre region of southern France. In 1946, he enrolled at the École Supérieure des Garçons in Paris and subsequently studied under Jeanne Lafaurie and Balenciaga. In 1961, he went independent with his future wife, Coqueline Barrière, and opened a salon on Rue Kléber in Paris. He rose to fame with his first collection, which focused on the miniature and offered ease of movement. In 1965, he introduced the miniskirt, known as the "mini look." This skirt, which exposed the kneecaps—then considered the most ugly part of haute couture—created an explosive boom and became a defining feature of the 1960s fashion world. In 1967, he introduced the highly stretchable "body tights," which later became a staple. He later launched perfume and men's departments.
In the 1980s, relations with partner company L'Oréal became complicated, and the company management rights and brand rights were transferred to Itokin Co., Ltd., but in 1993 the rights were bought back and the collection was restarted. In Japan, since 2003 only licensed products from Itokin Co., Ltd. have been sold, but last spring the brand made a re-debut at the concept shop "DECADE" on the second floor of the Isetan Shinjuku store.
