On March 19th, AMBELL held an installation for its 2014-15 AW collection. Designer Bunzo Kado chose the theme of "BLACK SYMPHONY" for this season, inspired by the American abstract expressionist artist Ad Reinhardt. Reinhardt is known for his "Black Paintings," square black drawings. While at first glance appear jet black, the works combine the darkest tones of various colors, creating a sense of depth. Reinhardt's designs were clearly incorporated into the realistic garments presented. They were transformed into tartan, gingham, checkerboard, and other plaid patterns, as well as the iconic square pockets on the front of the items. The depth of black is also evident in the materials used, such as the braided satin dress, which reflects different expressions depending on the light, and the curly fur blouson. This depth is not just superficial, but is also reflected in the structure of the bonded coat dress. Kadono also noted that "I was inspired not only by his signature works but also by his life," and that the period when Reinhardt designed flags and emblems related to war was also a factor. Military-inspired items were created, including jacquard fabrics combining emblem patterns and checks, and trench coats. The hairstyle of the torso wearing them was inspired by a helmet. The silhouette, defined by a high waist, evokes the 1960s, the era when Reinhardt was active, but Kadono said that this was not a conscious effort. "This time, I wanted to make black look beautiful. All other colors are used to complement the black. This collection expresses Reinhardt's artistic life," Kadono said. True to the theme, the collection played a symphony in one factor.
