100 Tokyo opens. METI promotes Japan's unique culture to the world

Mar 23, 2014

As part of the "Cool Japan" project promoted by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, the website "100 Tokyo" launched on March 20th, showcasing unique things, experiences, and places in Tokyo and other parts of Japan.

The website features a wide selection of topics, including design, fashion, art, food, cutting-edge technology, architecture, tourist destinations, accommodations, and events, across a wide range of genres, all of which are of interest to the world.

The website collects photos posted under the hashtag "#100Tokyo" on social media sites like Google+, providing a timeless showcase of "interesting things in Tokyo and Japan right now" from both Japan and overseas. The website plans to showcase 100 items per year, with approximately 30 items selected by the site upon launch. To enhance convenience for international visitors, the website allows users to create their own bookmarks under "Save to My Tokyo," and also features maps and other features. Content is displayed in both Japanese and English.

In addition, the "Photo Tour" will feature tours of Tokyo with famous people from Japan and abroad, introducing their recommended spots. The first tour will be guided by Jackson Tan, a leading creative director in Singapore, and MEG, a musician and model active in Tokyo and Paris.

The Creative Industries Division of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, which operates 100 Tokyo, has commented, "We hope that the information on this site will help people visiting Japan from overseas for business or tourism to improve the quality of their time and spending in Japan, and that they will come to realize that Japan is a creative city."

A party to celebrate the site's opening was held at the Google Japan headquarters in Roppongi, Tokyo on the 20th, and the venue was bustling with guests including overseas bloggers.
