"Hibiya Art Park 2025—A Month of Art Encounters Every Time You Visit," sponsored by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, will be held at Hibiya Park from April 25, 2025.

Tokyo Metropolitan Government has previously implemented the "Flower and Light Movement," which offers new ways to enjoy parks through seasonal flower and light displays. Following on from last year, Hibiya Park will present a new side to the park through a large-scale art installation that combines art with flowers and light.

This year, the content and duration of the art installations have been further expanded. The event will be divided into two periods, combining flowers and light with "art." The first period, "Transformed Composition - Playing with combinations and metaphors" (April 25th to May 11th), will focus on public art, while the second period, "Playing Catch - Practicing how to gather together" (May 17th to May 25th), will focus on performing arts.

The first phase, "Transformed Composition - Playing with Combinations and Metaphors," focuses on the concept of "mitate," a traditional Japanese expression technique in which one object is likened to another to create new meaning or value. It offers an experience that combines public art works by four artists, including Kubo Hiroko, Koganezawa Taketo + Nishihata Seijun, Giacomo Zaganelli, and Miyazaki Keita, with the nature and history of Hibiya Park.

Italian artist Giacomo Zaganelli's "Hibiya Ping Pong Platz" project features an original ping pong table designed specifically for this exhibition. It is a participatory installation that encourages spontaneous communication between strangers through ping pong. The highlight of the exhibition is a gigantic jungle that suddenly appears in the center of the park. This is the first collaborative work between artist Taketo Koganezawa and plant hunter Seijun Nishihata. Amidst the dense greenery, visitors can experience a different world that changes with the passage of time due to phenomena such as rain, light, and smoke. In two ponds within the park, works by Hiroko Kubo and Keita Miyazaki will appear to float on the water. Also, a gigantic sculpture by Hiroko Kubo, measuring approximately 20 meters in length, will lie in the grass plaza. This work was created together with participants in a workshop held during the preparation period for the exhibition.

The second phase, "“Play”ing Catch - Practicing How to Gather", will focus on performing arts and, inspired by the co-evolutionary relationship between flowers and insects, whereby they evolve while influencing each other, will aim to provide a space to explore building relationships that will allow us to live together through programs in the open space of Hibiya Park.

The program will include outdoor screenings of works by Ishinha, a group that has created unique "theaters" that invite audiences into an extraordinary world, as well as a space where you can experience Ishinha's famous food stall village, which will be held in Tokyo for the first time in 16 years. In addition, there will be a series of experiential art programs every day, including a participatory performance by Ueda Kumiko + miu + Kawamura Mikiko, in which performers selected through public auditions take on the role of "tiny non-human creatures" set in Hibiya Park in the morning, a VR work by Koizumi Meiro in which audience members are immersed in a world of light only perceptible by butterflies, and the outlines of their own bodies becoming blurred, and Oyamada Toru's "Hiboko," in which participants gather around fire = light, creating a space that generates rich communication. There will also be several dance and theater workshops that anyone can easily participate in, creating a space where the nature of Hibiya Park and each participant's body can intersect.
