Emmanuel Saulnier exhibition at Maison Hermès in Ginza, a tribute to jazz pianist Monk

Jun 14, 2017

The Emmanuel Saulnier exhibition "ATM tempo I/II/III: A Tribute to Thelonious Monk" will be held at Ginza Maison Hermès Forum in Tokyo's Ginza district from July 14 to October 31. This exhibition grew out of Emmanuel Saulnier's solo exhibition "Black Dancing," held at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris in February, and was conceived as a homage to jazz pianist Thelonious Monk. Inspired by Monk's performance during his 1963 Japan tour, the piece is composed of three musical sections (tempo I/II/III). It explores the state of the contemporary artist, touching on works by Saulnier as well as those of artists who were close friends of Monk. Emmanuel Saulnier was born in Paris, France in 1952. He began his career as an artist in the late 1970s, and after a residency at the Villa Medici (Rome) in 1986, he became known primarily for his works using glass. His contemporary sculptures, which spotlight inorganic objects, reference historical events and tragedies that are close to him, and he continues to pose fundamental questions about human existence in modern society using rich metaphors and silence. He also has a close relationship with the Fondation Hermès, and has been active in a wide range of fields, including holding a solo exhibition at the foundation's gallery, La Verriere (Brussels, 2002), and serving as a mentor in a residency program for young artists.
