An exhibition of small, toy-like portable record players! Live performance featuring 100 players

Jul 19, 2016

The "Japanese Portable Record Players" exhibition, showcasing fun and cute portable record players, will be held at the Seikatsu Kobo Gallery in Setagaya Ward, Tokyo, from July 30 to August 28. Many Japanese people were familiar with these small, toy-like portable record players during the heyday of records from the 1960s to the 1980s. These devices were mass-produced and discarded over time, but looking at them from a modern perspective, they pack a variety of functions into their small boxes—radio, cassette, echo, rhythm box, keyboard—and many are interesting in design, even enjoyable for their form alone. The exhibition will feature approximately 100 of these fun and cute players that graced our everyday musical landscapes. The exhibit will be accompanied by commentary by their owner, Fumito Taguchi of Enban in Koenji. Additionally, a related event will feature a live performance by ASUNA, who performs live using keyboards and toys, from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM on August 14. This time, Taguchi Fumito will create a performance session using 100 portable record players and 100 keyboards. In addition, from 3:00 pm to 4:30 pm on July 31st, a record listening event will be held using the players on display. Participants will be able to compare the 10 players and discover the unique characteristics of each.

Please note that on July 31st and August 13th and 14th, related events will be held using the players on display, so the number of exhibits will be reduced.
