Jun 15, 2017

The 91st Soen Awards public judging session was held on June 13th at the Bunka Gakuen Endo Memorial Hall in Yoyogi, Tokyo, and Apichat Naranshah of Thailand was awarded the prize. Her dress, hand-knitted from a mix of different materials, including knitwear and glitter yarn, was highly praised for its beauty, structure, and finish. Naranshah, who graduated from Bunka Fashion Graduate University this year and is currently a teaching assistant at the university, expressed her joy by saying, "I love handmade crafts. It took me about a month to make this while watching TV. In the future, I'd like to make accessories and parts." The first place honorable mention went to Yu Nonaka, who expressed the beauty of insects by cutting out asymmetrical prints in the shape of moth wings, folding them in half, and combining them. The second place honorable mention went to Munetaka Kusaka, who expressed the vitality and dynamism of living creatures. The Asian Couture Federation Award went to Liang Yu of China, whose design was inspired by the internal structure of a watch. The Looms Award went to Shoya Inoue, whose work explored the concept of beauty created by overlapping lines. Judge Issei Takashima commented, "The level was high, and the variety of genres made it enjoyable." Toshikazu Iwatani commented, "The Soen Award was very beautiful. It was truly beautiful. There were many other wonderful works this time, and the level was very high." Atsuro Tayama commented, "I gave Apichat and Honorable Mention winner Nonaka a perfect score of 10, but the total score of 3 points led to the Soen Award." Akira Minagawa commented, "The Honorable Mention winners and second place winners were comparable in terms of volume and ideas, but the Soen Award winner's work was recognized for its complete structure as clothing." Tamae Hirokawa commented, "I was impressed by many of the sculptures and artistic pieces that used complex techniques, but it would have been nice if they had made use of the movement of the fabric rather than simply assembling parts." Yasuhiro Mihara offered some advice, saying, "The winning works were beautiful, but I think it would be good if they had more to offer than just beauty, something that goes beyond fashion."
