Colbert Committee and Tokyo University of the Arts hold an event showcasing student works based on science fiction novels

Jun 13, 2017

"Rever 2074, a Dream World" (pronounced "utopia"), a project created by the Colbert Committee (composed of 81 of France's leading luxury brands, including Hermès, Chanel, Cartier, and Baccarat) in collaboration with the Tokyo University of the Arts' Faculty of Fine Arts, provides students with an opportunity to create artwork. The project, which opened to the public on June 17th at the University Art Museum, Tokyo University of the Arts, was initiated by the Colbert Committee, which celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2014, to project its own vision of how luxury creation will evolve over the next 60 years. The committee has named this trajectory and future "utopia." As concrete examples of expression, six science fiction writers have written six novels, one musician has composed a melody, and one linguist has proposed a new word. This collaboration with Tokyo University of the Arts will present the world's first visualization of this "utopia," and will be held as a competition with the aim of nurturing future artists. Specifically, students will choose a science fiction novel translated into Japanese by the Comité Colbert Japan (also available to the public as an e-book). The competition called for submissions of artworks inspired by the novel. The committee provided funding for the production of the 50 students selected in the first round of judging in June last year, and three science fiction authors visited Japan in October to hold a workshop. The second round of judging will be held on June 16th this year, with the winners announced on the same day. The works selected will be invited to exhibit at FIAC (Paris International Contemporary Art Fair) in October. "Many haute couture houses that create one-of-a-kind pieces participate in the Comité Colbert, and we want to carry on that spirit by holding a unique event in one country, rather than repeating the same event in multiple countries. Science fiction novels, created by Jules Verne in France before the 20th century, were brought to Japan and well-received. The deep cultural dialogue between our two countries, which also have deep ties in the literary world, is a project that could not be realized in any other country," said Elisabeth Ponsolle des Portes, president and CEO of the Comité Colbert. Thirty CEOs of French luxury brands that are members of the Comité Colbert will also be visiting Japan to coincide with the final judging and awards ceremony.
