KENZO's 2013-14 Autumn/Winter collection was unveiled at Paris Fashion Week. Creative directors Humberto Leon and Carol Lim designed the collection. The venue, the former Samaritaine department store, retains a 1930s atmosphere. The building was originally home to a Kenzo boutique. Drawing inspiration from the ribbon dress worn by model Sayoko Yamaguchi in the finale of a Kenzo show during the Kenzo era, the collection incorporated images of ancient Asian temples in India, Nepal, and China. The "eye," a guardian deity in ancient mythology, serves as the collection's symbol. A diverse range of materials, including multicolored grosgrain ribbons, gold jacquard fabric, glitter prints, and prints of gazing eyes, combine to create a glittering world. The texture of high-tech crocodile-print jacquard is used to create structured bomber jackets and wrap skirts with rounded, crescent-shaped shoulders, evoking ancient warriors alongside boxy T-shirts. Shirts and jumpsuits are adorned with eel-shaped ruffles reminiscent of a traditional musical instrument called a serban. Kimono-sleeved gowns and shirts, mini dresses with an "X" shape (a motif in the brand's advertising visuals), and sari-style long dresses all exude an Asian vibe. Following on from last season's collaboration with jewelry brand Delfina Delettrez, accessories include gold ribbon necklaces, rings, and earrings with an eye motif. KENZO logo caps and sweatshirts, which proved a huge hit, are now backordered even at Paris boutiques. KENZO is rapidly expanding its business in China, with plans to open 10 stores in the next year.
