Contemporary art exhibition by Yayoi Kusama, Kohei Nawa and others held at Opera City

Apr 2, 2015

The Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery will host the "Takahashi Collection: Mirror Neurons" exhibition from April 18 to June 28. This exhibition showcases the collection of Ryutaro Takahashi, a psychiatrist and renowned collector of contemporary art. Approximately 140 works by 52 artists, including Yayoi Kusama, Katsura Funakoshi, and Akira Nawa, will be exhibited on an unprecedented scale. Among these works will be "PixCell-Lion," a work created by Kohei Nawa specifically for Takahashi, making its public debut. The exhibition title, "mirror neurons," refers to the nerve cells in the brain that are thought to control empathy and mimicry. Takahashi used this term as a keyword for considering Japanese art and culture. It illustrates how the "analogy" technique in contemporary Japanese art is not only relevant to global trends such as "imitation" and "quotation" in contemporary art, but also to traditional Japanese aesthetics such as "mitate" (metaphoric recitation) and "yatsushi" (artistic imitation). Gallery talks by Takahashi will be held on April 18th and May 24th. Many artists will also be participating as guest performers on those days. In addition, a conversation between Nawa Kohei and art journalist Suzuki Yoshio is scheduled for May 16th.
