Kohei Nawa showcases gravity-driven art, including liquid spatial sculptures, in Yanaka

Mar 3, 2015

SCAI THE BATHHOUSE, a gallery renovated from a public bathhouse in Yanaka, Tokyo, opened in 1993, will host Kohei Nawa's solo exhibition "FORCE" from March 7th to April 18th.
Kohei Nawa is a contemporary artist known for his works using prism sheets, polyurethane foam, glass beads, and other materials. His objects, utilizing cutting-edge 3D technology and chemical approaches, amplify the information content of the surface texture while maximizing the properties of the materials. While showcasing new possibilities for contemporary sculpture through the observer's perceptual experience, he also questions the reality of existence in a digital society by contrasting the increasingly diluted reality of objects.
Three new works will be presented in this exhibition. One of them, the installation "Force," features black silicone oil falling like rain, creating black pools in various places on the floor. The oil, which continues to flow in a certain direction at high speed, is positioned in space due to its unique viscosity and gravity, completing the liquefied sculpture.

Meanwhile, in his two-dimensional works, the "Direction" series, pigment is dripped from the top edge of a vertically stretched canvas. The monochrome repetition and autonomous gradation create strong contrast. In "Moment," a tank of pigment is used as a pendulum, causing the ink to trail in a complicated circular pattern while the canvas is moved, generating localized chaos.
