The Mitsubishi Ichigokan Museum in Marunouchi, Tokyo, will be hosting the exhibition "Paris Graphics: Toulouse-Lautrec and Prints and Posters that Became Art" from October 18 to January 8. The exhibition examines the diverse scope of printmaking in late 19th-century Paris, showcasing approximately 140 works, primarily lithographs and posters, as well as oil paintings and illustrated books, from the museum's and the Van Gogh Museum's valuable late-19th-century print collections. While the museum co-hosted the "Vallotton: Painter of Cold Flame" exhibition in 2014 with the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, this time it will be co-organized with the Van Gogh Museum, which also boasts an impressive collection of late-19th-century graphic works. Taking advantage of the unique characteristics of both museums' collections, the exhibition clearly presents two distinct approaches: the exquisite, high-quality works that responded to the demands of fin-de-siècle enthusiasts and collectors, and the posters and pamphlets that shone on the streets, theaters, and cabarets of Paris amid growing commercial acceptance.
In addition, a commemorative lecture (1,000 yen including tax, free for students) featuring Fleur-Luce Rosa do Carvalho, curator at the Van Gogh Museum, will be held from 2:00 pm to 3:30 pm on October 18th, advance reservations are required (registration begins at 1:30 pm, maximum capacity 120 people).
