An exhibition of Giuseppe Arcimboldo's works, the "painter of fantasy" beloved by the Holy Roman Emperor, is being held

Jan 17, 2017

The "Arcimboldo" exhibition, featuring works by Giuseppe Arcimboldo, also known as the painter of the fantastic, will be held at the National Museum of Western Art in Ueno, Tokyo, from June 20 to September 24.

Giuseppe Arcimboldo was a painter active at the Habsburg courts of Vienna and Prague in the late 16th century. He created many allegorical portraits that combined motifs such as fruits, vegetables, fish, and books in unexpected ways, and was a favorite of Holy Roman Emperors such as Maximilian II, who had a deep interest in natural science, and Rudolf II, known as an unparalleled art lover.

This "Arcimboldo" exhibition will explore the secrets behind the creation of Arcimboldo's visual world, focusing on approximately 10 of Arcimboldo's oil paintings from major museums around the world.
