Print exhibition by Yayoi Kusama and Taro Okamoto, two of Japan's leading avant-garde artists, to be held at Shinjuku Isetan

Jun 7, 2017

The Isetan Shinjuku Main Building, 5th Floor Art Gallery, will host the "Prints by Taro Okamoto and Yayoi Kusama" exhibition from June 7th to 13th, showcasing two of Japan's leading avant-garde artists. In 1930, at the age of 19, before the war, Taro Okamoto traveled to Paris, France, where he became fascinated with the abstract art and surrealist movements. After the war, he became known for his Tower of the Sun at the Expo '70 and his famous quote, "Art is an explosion." Meanwhile, Yayoi Kusama moved to the United States in 1957 and dedicated herself to avant-garde art in the 1960s with her daring "Happenings," in which she wore polka dots all over her body. Now known worldwide as "KUSAMA," she received the Order of Culture in 2016, at the age of 87. This exhibition will explore the appeal of the works of these two artists, who, despite based in different locations, remain active leaders of Japanese avant-garde art and remain beloved to this day. Eight works from the 1960s to 1980s by Taro Okamoto will be on display and for sale, including the Crack series, Letter series, Wind, and Hiroshima, while Yayoi Kusama will feature approximately 30 prints from the 1970s to the 2000s, ranging from flowers, pumpkins, and handbags to iconic dot and net motifs (only available until 6:00 p.m. on the final day, the 13th).
