Iittala, a Finnish design brand developed by Fiskars Japan Co., Ltd., will release "Iittala X mina perhonen," a collection of porcelain, glass, and fabric products printed with bird patterns hand-drawn by designer Akira Minagawa.

In the summer of 2020, Finnish design brand Iittala will announce a new collaboration with mina perhonen. The personal accessories from the "Iittala X minä perhonen" collection, made up of porcelain, glass, and fabric products printed with bird patterns hand-drawn by Akira Minagawa, will bring lightness to everyday life and will become precious treasures over time.

Minä Perhonen was founded in 1995 by designer Akira Minagawa. The brand is known and loved worldwide for creating fabrics with original designs. The brand name comes from Finnish, with "min" meaning "I" and "perhonen" meaning "butterfly." It symbolizes the deep connection with Nordic culture that Akira Minagawa has built since his first visit to Finland at the age of 19.

"I visited Finland for the first time when I was 19 years old. It was winter and I went all the way to Rovaniemi, located within the Arctic Circle. One of the impressions I had was how comfortable the Finnish people lived, even when it was minus 35 degrees outside. Their homes and surroundings were filled with wonderful traditional design. Since that trip about 35 years ago, Finland has become one of my favorite countries," says Akira Minagawa.

A shared design philosophy
Iittala and Minä Perhonen share the same values and design philosophy. Both brands design everyday items that can be used daily and passed down for generations. Craftsmanship and attention to detail play an important role in the design process. Iittala is known for its deep expertise and high skill in glass, while Minä Perhonen has collaborated with factories and artisans both in Japan and abroad to develop materials and techniques.

A collection of small everyday items
"Iittala X minä perhonen," designed by Akira Minagawa, features hand-painted bird patterns that bring lightness and happiness to everyday life.
"Birds are one of my favorite motifs. Birds are very free creatures, and they seem to fly around feeling happy. A bird's wings symbolize infinite possibilities for people. I hope that when children use this collection, they will be able to identify with the bird and empathize with it. Perhaps their parents will then find a connection with their parents. I hope that everyone will find their own bird in this collection," says Akira Minagawa.

The collection consists of glass accessories, porcelain, tote bags, pouches, and key rings. The glass bird objects, available in three colors and three shapes, were made at Iittala's glass factory in Finland. The woven linen pouches come in two sizes and two colors, and the tote bags are 100% cotton. The unique key rings, each with a different pattern, are made from sewing factory scraps. All fabrics are made in Japan. The porcelain mugs, plates, and bowls are shaped like Teema. The fun bird-themed tableware is perfect for breakfast or snacks. "Over time, each item becomes filled with the memories of its owner. We believe this is a value beyond compare," says Akira Minagawa. The "Iittala X minä perhonen" collection will be available globally from September 2020. In Japan, it will be available from July 15, 2020, ahead of the global launch, at Iittala shops, the official online shop, minä perhonen stores, and lifestyle stores. (Only the three bird objects will be released in mid-August)
