Mitsui Fudosan Co., Ltd. established a wholly owned project company, Shanghai Jingqiao Business Management Co., Ltd., in April of this year. It has decided to develop the "(tentative name) LaLaport Shanghai Jinqiao" in the Jinqiao Export Processing Zone in Shanghai's Pudong New Area. Construction is scheduled to begin in December 2014, with a planned opening in 2017.

The building will have seven floors above ground (with a partial nine floor) and two below, with a total floor area of 142,000 square meters and will house approximately 200 stores. Similar to LaLaport locations in Japan, the planned store lineup will include retail stores primarily selling the latest apparel, a large-scale supermarket, and leisure facilities such as amusement facilities and restaurants. Mitsui Fudosan will lease the entire building constructed by Shanghai Jinqiao Export Processing Zone Joint Development Co., Ltd., and operate it as LaLaport Shanghai Jinqiao. With the construction of Shanghai Pudong International Airport and the Maglev Line, the Pudong New Area is being developed as Shanghai's eastern gateway. It also serves as a special economic zone in the eastern Shanghai district, thriving in a variety of industries, including finance, IT, electronics, and chemicals. The Jinqiao Export Processing Zone was previously home to many factories, but in recent years, commercial and residential development has progressed rapidly as factories have relocated, and transportation infrastructure such as subways and roads is under construction. Conveniently located approximately 7km from the center of the Pudong New Area, the area is surrounded by high-end residential areas, many of which are middle- to high-income earners, including foreigners. Mitsui Fudosan opened Shanjing Outlet Plaza Ningbo in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province, China, in September 2011, marking its first overseas commercial facility project. LaLaport Shanghai Jinqiao marks the first overseas expansion of the domestically operated suburban shopping complex LaLaport.
