Tokujin Yoshioka's first large-scale solo exhibition in Japan will be held at the Museum of Contemporary Art in October

Aug 13, 2013

A large-scale solo exhibition by internationally acclaimed artist Tokujin Yoshioka, known for his store designs for ISSEY MIYAKE and Swarovski, will open at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo on October 3rd. The exhibition will feature works from Yoshioka's 2007 Crystallized Project, including a new crystal painting titled "Swan Lake" and a crystallized rose sculpture called "Rose." The exhibition will also feature the Japanese premiere of the architectural project "Rainbow Church," unveiled at his 2010 solo exhibition "Tokujin Yoshioka_SPECTRUM" in Seoul, South Korea. Other works on display include representative works such as "Spider's Thread," a chair made of seven threads, and "Water Block," a glass bench, as well as a large-scale installation that expresses Yoshioka's theme of "the accidental beauty created by nature." After graduating from Kuwasawa Design School, Yoshioka studied design under Shiro Kuramata and Issey Miyake, and in 2000 he founded the Tokujin Yoshioka Design Office. He has been involved in the design of Issey Miyake shops for over 20 years, including the Ginza flagship store of the accessory brand Swarovski. He has also been responsible for the spatial design of Hermes and the packaging design of the cosmetics brand SUQQU. His works are exhibited and collected in major art museums such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Pompidou Center, and the Musée d'Orsay, and he presents new works every year at the Milan Salone. He was also selected as one of Newsweek magazine's 2007 list of "100 Japanese People Respected by the World."
