Each bookstore will act as a concierge, recommending "the book you should read right now" to FASHION HEADLINE readers. Every Thursday, each branch of the art bookshop "NADiff" will introduce a recommended book. This time, we will be visiting the flagship store, NADiff Apartment in Ebisu, Tokyo (1-18-4 NADiff A/P/A/R/T, 1st floor, Ebisu, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo). ■ "ART OR SOUND" From spring to fall 2014, the Prada Foundation's gallery, Ca' Corner della Regina, in Venice, hosted the acclaimed "Sound or Art" exhibition, which chronologically presented various musical instruments and artworks from the 16th century to the present, while reconsidering their relationships. This book, published as a catalog, presents various musical instruments and artworks in chronological order. Beginning with a 16th-century painting of a woman playing an instrument, the book includes works from the 17th century, marble and inlaid guitars, the 20th century "intonarumori" instruments invented by Luigi Russolo, and works by Marcel Duchamp and Man Ray. From the 1960s, the book includes John Cage's "Water Walk" performance and Robert Rauschenberg's "Oracle," a piece that creates sound with five radio voices and flowing water against a backdrop of discarded materials. It also includes works by Robert Morris and Laurie Anderson, among others. From the 2000s, the book expands to include a myriad of works by Doug Aiken, Christian Marclay, Thomas Demand, and Anri Sala, as well as essays by Douglas Kahn, Alan Licht, and David Toupe. The beautifully bound book makes for a fascinating read.
