■ "Erik Satie Exhibition" Supervised by Ornella Volta, translated by Omori Tatsuji
French musician Erik Satie is known for giving his works cynical and humorous titles, such as "Squishy Prelude for a Dog." Satie's innovative techniques had a major influence on subsequent Western music, but his style and unusual behavior also earned him the nickname "a maverick in the music world." Satie's eccentricities are numerous, including his uniform of pince-nez, bowler hat, and goatee, his habit of carrying an umbrella even when it wasn't raining, and the discovery of a large pile of umbrellas in his room after his death.
During Satie's lifetime, various artistic movements, including Fauvism, Cubism, Dadaism, and Surrealism, flourished one after another. Satie was deeply interested in the works of his contemporaries, including Picasso, Cocteau, Man Ray, and Duchamp. These artists, in turn, loved and influenced Satie's music, transforming it into their own work.
This book focuses on the artistic career of Erik Satie, described by Man Ray as "the only musician who had an eye," and showcases his interactions with contemporaries such as Picasso and Cocteau through a wealth of works and rare photographs. This book allows readers to experience Paris during the Roaring Age through Satie.
In addition, from July 8th to August 30th, Bunkamura The Museum will be hosting the "Erik Satie and His Era" exhibition. At the venue, visitors can experience a new side to the composer Satie through the works of artists who, in addition to his music, captured his activities through their interactions with other artists and who inspired him. (Note: This book is different from the exhibition catalog.)
