Seibu Shibuya renovates for the first time in eight years, with a view to a major renovation after 2020

Jun 5, 2015

Seibu Shibuya Store will undergo its first renovation in eight years in August this year, in preparation for its participation in Shibuya's redevelopment plan from 2020 onward and the accompanying large-scale renovation. Based on the theme of "Art & Design," the store will work with various artists to create a new, highly sophisticated store in both Buildings A and B.
The entrance on the first floor of Building A will feature a completely new "sound and video" installation by Carsten Nicolai, a contemporary artist active in both visual art and music. The pillars at the entrance will be decorated with colors and sounds that correspond to the outside temperature and the flow of people. By giving digital signals a "will," the store will offer a new, one-of-a-kind sound and video experience, with no images being the same every second, 365 days of the year.
The third floor of Building A will be an independently curated sales floor aimed at "highly sensitive women in their 30s," proposing a new contemporary style with a key-to-style lineup featuring items that are the "key" to coordinating outfits. Designer Oki Sato, who was selected as one of Newsweek magazine's "100 Most Respected Japanese People in the World," has created an environmental concept of "an amusement park adjacent to a European park," fusing art, design, and sophisticated fashion.
On the fifth floors of Building A and Building B, the store aims to create sales floors that will surprise "highly-sensitive adults in their 50s," and hired female architect Yuko Nagayama, whose work includes the Louis Vuitton Kyoto Daimaru store and "House on a Hill." The fifth floor of Building A is designed around the concept of a "palace," while the fifth floor of Building B is designed around the concept of a "museum." The two new concepts will be connected by a connecting bridge.
