Tamae Hirokawa of Somarta holds her first solo exhibition in Japan at Seibu Shibuya

Sep 19, 2014

Fashion designer Tamae Hirokawa's first solo exhibition in Japan, "Tamae Hirokawa: The Lineage of the Body - Creation of SOMARTA," will be held at the special venue on the 7th floor of Seibu Shibuya Building A. The exhibition will run from October 7th to 19th, with admission priced at 500 yen. In 2006, she founded "SOMA DESIGN," a studio that handles a wide range of projects from fashion and graphics to sound creation, visual direction, and design. At the same time, she also launched the design project "SOMARTA." She is one of the most sought-after fashion designers at the Tokyo Collection. Her diverse activities include participating in Japan Fashion Week since Spring/Summer 2007, winning the 25th Mainichi Fashion Grand Prix Newcomer Award and Shiseido Encouragement Award, and designing the uniforms for Shiseido's comprehensive beauty facility, SHISEIDO THE GINZA, in 2011. He has also presented numerous installations, furniture, and concept cars in corporate collaborations and exhibitions both in Japan and abroad, including NEOREAL Milano Salone (Canon, 2008), iQ×SOMARTA MICROCOSMOS (TOYOTA, 2008), Feel and Think: A New Era of Tokyo Fashion (Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery, 2011), Future Beauty (MOT Mercedes-Benz, 2012), Leonardo da Vinci's Ideal of Beauty (Bunkamura, 2012), and Out of Hand (MAD NY, 2013).

His "Skin Series," based on the concept of "the possibilities of clothing on the body," uses seamless bodywear knits as a base and makes full use of embroidery and crystal decorations to weave the beauty of minimalist clothing that feels like a second skin.

In this exhibition, past works created with a focus on the "body" will be brought together with new works, reconstructing Hirokawa Tamae's world. You can enjoy the lineage of the body, which spreads from the head to the feet, from individual parts to the whole.
