"Deauville is where it all began for the Maison. In 1912, Gabrielle Chanel's millinery shop was opened there, and shortly thereafter, her visionary, avant-garde clothing began to be created. For her, it all began here. This story is very important to me as well," says Virginie Viard. Whether it's the racecourse or the seaside, the card tables, the restaurants, the palace or the famous promenade, Les Planches, everything seems to be about elegance and expressing yourself – that's Deauville.

"For this collection, we've recreated the promenade of Deauville," explains Virginie Viard. "Long, romantic silhouettes stride through the light, from dawn to dusk, projected onto giant screens." Models stroll along the beach, shrouded in a mysterious atmosphere. The 1920s and 1970s intertwine.

Virginie Viard's androgynous and cinematic Fall/Winter 2024/25 ready-to-wear collection draws femininity from Gabrielle Chanel's wardrobe and masculinity from the delicate elegance of winter by the sea. Broad-shouldered peacoats and long belted dressing gown-style coats are worn with box-pleated skirts, culottes, tweed suits with cropped trousers, and drop-front trousers with tabbed backs.

Chunky sailor-inspired sweaters and knitwear featuring landscapes of Deauville alternate with sailor-collar silk blouses, low-cut tops with herringbone and flounce details, jumpsuits and negligees. Their gracefulness evokes scenes of gently breaking waves and soft breezes.

Vivid hues and pastels – pink, mauve, orange and pale blue – are inspired by the ever-changing colours of Deauville’s skies and are accented with brown and gold glitter. 35mm film and cinema ticket print patterns link the city to the seventh arts, including the annual American Film Festival and Claude Lelouch’s A Man and a Woman. The film by Inès & Vinoodh, which opened the show, paid tribute to the film.

"There's something captivating about the silhouette of David Bowie or the image of a movie star like Anouk Aimée, a dear friend of Gabrielle Chanel, walking across the sand. This collection is a homage to those familiar faces."
